D 4. Housing and Newcomer Communities: Navigating the Systems (Offered again as a Drop-in session on Wednesday evening B5)

This presentation will focus on retention of housing with particular focus on immigrants experience in the Community Housing Corporation (TCH) and social housing as a whole. This presentation will outline the 3 basic tools of housing retention and enjoyment: The Residential Tenancy Act in relation to roles and responsibilities; the Social Housing Housing Reform Act in relation to income and housing retention; the Community Housing Standards in relation to healthy living environment. In addition the presentation will focus on other tools of enhancing healthy housing communities such as the Toronto Housing’s Tenant Participation System and the Participatory budgeting system as tools for immigrants to contribute meaningfully in building healthy communities.
Michelle Haney-Kileeg has 27 years experience in municipal service delivery largely in the social housing sector. She held a variety of management roles including District Manager overseeing 5000 units in the former cities of York and Etobicoke and General Manager of Housing Connections. Currently Director Community Housing, TCH overseeing the seniors housing and single family homes portfolio.
M.S. Mwarigha has 15 years experience in housing policy and management, access advocacy, social planning and program development. Worked for NGOs and social housing including: Canadian African NewComer Centre, Social Planning Council of Metro Toronto, Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation and Toronto Community Housing. Currently he is the Operating Unit Manager for the York Black Creek area - TCHC.
