Intercultural Communication Skills

Intercultural communication skills are essential for both newcomers and individuals working with them. Presenters will:

  • Define “culture” as it applies to the integration of newcomers
  • Elaborate on types of communication in settlement
  • Present exemplifying principles of intercultural communication
  • Apply Bennett’s model of intercultural sensitivity
  • Apply adaptable strategies: pre-empting difficulties, managing confusion in intercultural communication, and implementing repair strategies
  • Present a discussion of implications for procedures, best practices, and policy
  • Yuri Kagolovsky is a medical doctor from Ukraine and Professor of Health Informatics at Conestoga College. He has published and presented internationally on issues related to health informatics (an emerging field of great interest to internationally trained medical professionals). He has immigrated twice himself and is very interested in 2nd careers for internationally trained professionals.
    Kathryn Brillinger is a Professor of ESL and TESL at Conestoga College and has over 20 years of settlement LINC and ESL teaching experience. She has presented extensively on teaching, pronunciation, and intercultural skills. She has an MEd in TESL.
