Journey to Promote Mental Health: A Workshop for Immigrant & Refugee Service Workers
The key objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of workers and volunteers in the settlement service sector to address and deal with mental health issues presented by the individuals and communities they serve and making timely referrals to appropriate services. After attending the workshop, participants are expected to have:
- Increased understanding of holistic health, mental health and mental illness
- Increased knowledge and skills to early identify symptoms of mental health issues or illness
- Increased awareness and knowledge of the early prevention measures to address mental health issues
- A clearer understanding of the role that migration plays in the mental health and well-being of immigrants and refugees
- Increased awareness of self biases and assumptions about mental health and mental illness and its impact on service delivery
- Enhanced knowledge of mental health community resources
- Increased knowledge of strategies to promote mental health and well-being
Raymond C.Y. Chung, MSW RSW received social work training at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Toronto. He went on to work in the Child Welfare system for over 26 years. He is a co-founder of Hong Fook Mental Health Association and was a Member of Scarborough Board of Health 1993-1996, and a Board Member of Hincks Dellcrest Centre from 1994-2000. He is a member of the Central East Local Health Integration Network Scarborough Collaborative. Currently, he is the Executive Director of Hong Fook Mental Health Association.
Maria Lo is a Mental Health Worker and Training Facilitator at Hong Fook Mental Health Association. Maria has many years of experience working with immigrants who face settlement and mental health issues.
Linda Yoo is the Research & Development Coordinator at Hong Fook Mental Health Association and has been with Hong Fook since 2001. She is also a part-time student at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto.
