A1: Bridging Settlement and Employment Counselling
Level: Introductory
Providing employment information and access to work opportunities is a big component of settlement work. This workshop will contrast the similarities and differences of skills used in both fields and will highlight the critical elements present in employment counselling. The workshop will review the common steps and processes that lead to paid employment and will provide an overview of employment services in Ontario including a brief update on recent changes to Employment Ontario funded programs. This workshop is designed to be interactive and experiential in the first part and information driven in the second part.
In this workshop participants will:
- Learn the intersection between settlement and employment counselling
- Examine employment counselling skills
- Identify critical element present in the employment process
- Review the overall organization of employment services in Ontario
Dolores Montavez Ruz manages the Life Skills Training, Coaching, Publications and the Career Assessment and Planning program for YWCA Toronto. She has been involved in human development and career advancement for over 10 years and has authored a number of Life Skills and career development training programs. She draws from her background in ESL teaching, career counselling and life coaching to design creative and highly interactive learning experiences.
