B: Peer Learning through Online Communities of Practice

Communities of practice are groups of people who share a passion for something they do and who interacts regularly to learn how to do it better. The session will discuss online communities of practice as learning and sharing tool for the settlement service sector.
Many workers in the immigrant service sector already share resources, information and knowledge in informal ways; this presentation will look at an online sharing process accessible to anyone interested in learning from other practitioners. The session will ask participants to share lessons from remote learning communities in which they are already involved, and will present Tamarack’s online and telephone communities of practice (http://tamarackcommunity.ca/g2_CofP.html ) as a case study of what makes a community of practice fly, and what makes it die (or evolve).
OCASI will start piloting online communities of practice in the next months. After this session, participants will have the opportunity to indicate their interest in participating. Please, bring your business card.
Brenda Doner has thirty years experience managing and training in the voluntary sector, including time with arts groups, in international development, and in community development and citizen engagement across Canada. For the past nine years she has consulted for IMPACS, Volunteer Canada, Tamarack - An Institute for Community Engagement, and Food Secure Canada, among others. Her work has taken her to Africa, to south-east Asia and to China as well as across Canada. Until it closed in 2007, she managed the Ontario Network of the Canada Volunteerism Initiative, a federally funded initiative to promote and strengthen volunteerism and citizen engagement.
